Within the park stand 56 ethnically themed exhibition halls arranged in a well-proportioned layout. Over 100,000 cultural relics preserved here record the long history of communication, exchange and integration among all ethnic groups, while more than a hundred scenic spots vividly recreate the traditional lifestyles of every nationality — From primitive and imposing architectural complexes to elegant, graceful gardens, from exquisitely crafted intangible cultural heritage works to gorgeous ethnic costumes, every detail bears witness to the profound cultural foundation behind the diversity and unity of the Chinese nation.
The Beijing Museum of Chinese Nationalities lies southwest of the Asian Games Village in Chaoyang District, Beijing, inside the National Olympic Park, with its address at No. 1 Minzu Garden Road.
Construction of the museum started in 1992. Its North Compound was completed and opened to the public on June 18, 1994, followed by the South Compound on September 29, 2001.
Covering a total area of 28.2 hectares, it is Beijing’s first large ethnic cultural base. As a comprehensive anthropological museum dedicated to the restoration, collection, exhibition and research of the cultures, cultural relics and social lives of China’s 56 ethnic groups, it is also among China’s first batch of AAAA-level tourist attractions.
History of the Establishment
Natural Landscapes
The park is home to China’s largest cast iron sculpture. It also features man-made scenic spots including simulated tropical banyan woods, underwater karst caves, Panlong Waterfall, replicas of Cangyuan rock paintings and sacred trees of Ali Mountain. These scenes perfectly integrate the daily lives of all ethnic peoples with their natural surroundings.
Ethnic Villages
The museum compound houses 36 ethnic villages in total. The North Compound contains 16 villages featuring Tibetan, Miao, Yi and other ethnic styles, while the South Compound has more than 20 villages including Uyghur and Mosuo styles.
All buildings are constructed on a full 1:1 scale. Representative architectures such as the Bai’s Three Houses with One Screen Wall, Dong drum towers and wind-rain bridges, as well as Dai stilt bamboo dwellings faithfully display the unique cultural heritage of all ethnic groups.
The museum showcases distinctive costumes and ornaments of all 56 ethnic groups, covering garments worn in daily life, festivals, rituals and other occasions of each ethnicity.
These exhibits highlight unique features of ethnic costumes in materials (cotton, linen, silk, fur, etc.) and crafts (embroidery, batik, brocade weaving, etc.). Meanwhile, they reflect each ethnic group’s historical traditions, living environments and aesthetic values, serving as an important window to appreciate the diversity and cultural connotations of ethnic costumes.
It houses over 430 traditional ethnic-style buildings and a comprehensive main exhibition hall, with a collection of 100,000 cultural relics in total.
Special exhibition areas such as embroidery workshops, research studios, ancestral halls, and transportation displays showcase production tools, daily utensils, ethnic costumes and handcrafts of all ethnic groups.
The Beijing Museum of Chinese Nationalities features an exceptionally unique atmosphere free from artificial embellishment.
Traditional architecture of all ethnic groups is authentically reconstructed and gathered in one compound. Tibetan courtyards full of snowland charm and Dai stilted bamboo houses with subtropical vibes are laid out along the natural terrain, blending perfectly with the surrounding plants, streams and ponds. As you wander around the compound, you may catch sight of distinctive ethnic artifacts hanging under the eaves, and come across performers in traditional ethnic costumes playing the sheng and dancing. The antique exhibits on display also convey the genuine warmth of daily life of all ethnic groups.
Bringing together diverse ethnic customs scattered all over the country in a natural and lively layout, the museum allows visitors to gradually immerse themselves in rich ethnic culture during their stroll.
Since the launch of its study tour programs in 2023, the museum has held more than 200 educational activities, averaging 17 events per month with 300 students participating in each session on average. Covering over 20 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government across China, the programs have engaged more than 100,000 student participants in total.
The Beijing Study Tour Program on Fostering a Strong Sense of Community for the Chinese Nation aims to promote the fine traditional culture of the Chinese nation. It guides young people to develop a correct view of ethnic groups, strengthen their sense of ethnic identity and national pride, and consolidate the sense of community for the Chinese nation, thus contributing to the realization of the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.
